How to prepare the birthday cake including how to layer the cake and how to frost it, adding fruit toppings

  1. Using the needed ingredients, bake the cake according to the instructions on the Duncan Hines cake mix box. This is a "decadent cupcake mix" box that actually specifies that it can yield 12 cupcakes but you can also make two small round cakes with it as well. After mixing the cake batter, pour the batter into two 9 inch round pans. Pour to make each pan half full.
  2. After the cake has baked in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 19-23 minutes (you will know it is fully cooked if you poke a knife into it and the knife emerges fairly clean and not gummy), allow the cake to cool completely before attempting to remove from the pans.
  3. How to layer the birthday cake: When the cake is fully cooled, gently flip the two pans onto two separate plates large enough to support the diameters of the cakes. Be careful to remove the cakes from the pans without breakage of the cakes.
  4. Evenly spread a large tablespoon of frosting across the top diameter of one cake and place the other cake on top of it.
  5. Continue frosting the cakes that are now layered into one, until they are fully covered with frosting. The frosting should be at room temperature and well stirred. You will be using most of the jar of Pillsbury cream cheese frosting if not all of it. If you have any remaining, it can be stored safely in your refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  6. After the cake is fully frosted comes what I think is the most fun part: That is arranging some delicious fresh fruit toppings on the cake. I chose strawberries and blueberries because I recently saw an online cake recipe photo (for a red velvet cake) where those fruit toppings were used on the cake and it was very inspiring for me because the fruit just made the cake look so pretty in my opinion. You will want to have at least 1 package of strawberries and 1 package of blueberries on hand to work with and arrange them in a pattern as seen in the photo or in a pattern that you desire. Of course stems must be cut off of the strawberries and all the fruit must be well washed and drained first.
  7. Reserve a small space in the center of the cake for a numerical birthday candle.
  8. Enjoy presenting the cake to the birthday girl or boy and family or friends who are helping to celebrate the beautiful occasion.

How to make a kid's birthday cake

How to prepare a kid's birthday cake is quite a general topic I realize as there are many, many types of cake you can potentially prepare. While this hub will only include one specific birthday cake recipe (which is not homemade but using a cake mix), I still endeavor to give the reader some various ideas for what you can do in preparing your child's birthday cake.

First, I personally love the idea of using a single numerical candle to indicate whatever age the child is turning on his or her birthday. As you will see on the cake below, there is a #3 candle.

If you prefer to use three regular birthday candles, that will look very nice on the cake too. Either way, the candle(s) are often what make a birthday cake seem like a birthday cake. The candle(s) are what makes it seem to give that special effect/ mark that special occasion.

Secondly, with kids' birthday cakes there is often a theme of some sort, especially when you are ordering a birthday cake from a bakery. You might find that most popular among the specialty cakes might be a Disney/Pixar Cars theme for a boy or a (pink) Princess theme for a girl.

Cake with fruit toppings is a favorite cake idea for our family

I love the idea of using fruit as a topping for a child's birthday cake. The strawberries and blueberries for the specific example below have great nutritional value. Other fruit toppings that I can imagine on cakes with a variety of fillings are kiwi slices or pineapple chunks for example.

Of course, birthday cake is a big treat, so in keeping with that, you might also choose instead to put some candy decorations for your theme. While not nutritious, it is very festive and fun. Big examples of doing this is when you are decorating the tops of cake with animal faces. In researching birthday cake ideas, I have seen black licorice (Twizzlers) cut and used as cat whiskers on top of a cake as well as Oreo cookies used as eyes or ears of a panda. These are all things you can think of doing too. There are lots of ideas out there. Check out YouTube for cake decoration ideas.

Preparing your child's birthday cake for yourself instead of purchasing a fully prepared and decorated cake can potentially save you some money, it can pretty easy especially if not baking from scratch and it is so much fun to do. If you prefer to make a more homemade cake from scratch, I suggest some recipes such as carrot cheesecake and banana cake. You will enjoy your little labor of love.
